VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Frostburg State softball team dropped a 12-1 decision to Salem College in game one of the Virginia Beach Blast before coming back to win, 5-4, against Roanoke in nine innings in game two.
Sophomore Allison Short tied her career-high seven strikeouts and sophomore Sam Gatton hit a triple to bring in the winning run against Roanoke in the ninth inning of play.
In game one, Salem held the Bobcats to only four total hits. Senior Lauren Capece scored the Bobcats only run off an RBI from junior Emily Zengel. Gatton, sophomore Rae Harrison and senior Renay Aubel also had hits for FSU.
Freshman Ali Caulkins and junior Carlie Lewis split time on the mound.
In game two, Zengel and junior Hannah Tavik each scored a run in the first inning to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Senior Taylor Blevins had an RBI and senior Allison Williams hit a sacrifice fly to bring in two more runs for the Bobcats.
Roanoke tied the game in the seventh to cause the game to go into extra innings. Ultimately, a triple from Gatton brought in the final Bobcat runner to give FSU the win. Gatton finished the game hitting 2-for-4.
Short and Tavik both saw time on the mound. Short finished with seven strikeouts while Tavik closed out the game with three strikeouts.
The tournament will continue tomorrow. The Bobcats will face Buffalo State at 10:00 am and finish out the day against Keuka College at 12:00 pm.
