THOMASVILLE, N.C. – The 10
th-ranked Frostburg State baseball team completed its season opening weekend on Sunday with a 10-1 victory over Stevenson in a game that lasted just six innings due to rain.
The win marks the second over the Mustangs (0-3) in three days and improves FSU to 3-0. In the last two wins, the Frostburg lineup has turned out 22 hits and 27 runs.
On Sunday, the Bobcats jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings before taking the contest 10-1. Senior KJ Hockaday drove in four, while senior Devin Bell and junior JT Tipton each posted two RBI. Senior Jamal Windom and junior Cody Harmon each had one RBI.
The run support was more than plenty for senior starter Anderson Burgess as he struckout eight batters and allowed just one earned run. He held Stevenson hitless through the first four innings and struckout five of the first six batters he faced. He struckout the side in the second inning.
In 6.0 innings of work, Anderson limited Stevenson to just two hits, one in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Both of Bell's RBI came in the bottom of the first inning as he smacked a two-run home run over the outfield fence that plated Harman for a quick 2-0 lead for Frostburg.
The Bobcats continued the attack in the second frame when Windom drove home senior Zach Keeler on a run producing fielder's choice. The next batter, Tipton singled through the left side that plated senior Pat Sines while Hockaday made it 8-0 Frostburg with a grand slam that scored Harman, Tipton and Windom.
Tipton drove in Sines on a groundout for the first of two runs in the fifth inning. Harman singled up the middle that allowed Windom to score for the 10
th and final run for the Bobcats.
Stevenson plated its lone run in the top of the sixth, but the game was already in hand for Frostburg.
Hockaday finished 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk and the grand slam in the second, while Bell was 1-for-2 that included his two-run bomb. Harman, along with seniors Zach Keeler and Connor Cooper all posted two hits on the afternoon.
The Bobcats return to action next weekend when they travel back to N.C., this time to Fayetteville, for three games. FSU opens action when it faces Farmingdale State at 3:00 pm on Friday.
