Baseball Sweeps Farmingdale State

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The 10th-ranked Frostburg baseball team posted a convincing sweep of Farmingdale State, Saturday in the Bobcats first doubleheader of the 2016 season.

The Bobcats improved to 5-0 on the season with the two wins. Frostburg shutout the Rams, 7-0, behind another dominating performance from sophomore starter Greg Schneider in the first game. In the second contest, FSU used a 10-run fifth inning for a 13-3 victory.

Schneider, the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week, struckout 10 batters in 6.0 innings of work for the win. He scattered just four hits and struckout four in the sixth inning after a batter reached on an error by the FSU catcher. Sophomore Tyler Hoffman tossed the final inning and struckout one while holding the Rams (0-2) hitless.

Frostburg struck early in the bottom of the first when senior KJ Hockaday singled to right center and scored when junior Devin Bell doubled to left center. Junior Brad Garrant, the next batter, lifted a pitch over the left field fence scoring Bell for a quick 3-0 cushion.

The Bobcats added three more runs in the fourth. Senior Jeremy Remalia scored on an error by the Farmingdale pitcher for the first run of the frame. Hockaday then scored senior Jamal Windom with a sacrifice fly and Bell allowed junior JT Tipton to score with another sacrifice fly.

FSU's final run came in the sixth when Garrant singled home Hockaday for the 7-0 win.

Senior Nick Huff earned his second win of the season in the second game after fanning one and allowing just one earned run in 1.2 innings pitched. Senior Anderson Burgess got the start on the mound and he struckout five in 4.0 innings.

Hockaday and Garrant each drove home a run in the bottom of the first and Bell smacked a home run to left center in the third inning, but it was a 10-run fifth inning that sealed the win for the Bobcats.

The Rams scored two in the second and tacked on a third run in the fifth to knot things at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Junior Cody Harman singled home the first run and five different players plated a run during the 10-run outburst. Senior Zach Keeler doubled home three runs, while Harman and Hockaday each drove home two. Tipton singled home a run and later scored on an error.

Hockaday finished the twinbill 4-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored, while Bell was 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs. Tipton was 3-for-7 with four runs and one RBI.

Frostburg returns to action tomorrow when it faces Pitt-Greensburg in a single-nine inning game at 12:00 pm.
