FROSTBURG, Md. – Sixth-ranked Christopher Newport used an early second half surge to earn an 82-71 victory over Frostburg, Monday at Bobcat Arena.
Senior Nick Smoot and sophomore Tyler Michael combined for 44 points and eight three-pointers for the Bobcats as they fell to 6-13 overall and 4-8 in the CAC.
Smoot scored 21 points in the second half and finished with a game-high 23 behind five three-pointers. Michael added 21 points on nine baskets.
Frostburg cut a 17-point first-half deficit to just seven points inside the final minute when Michael hit a jumper with 53 seconds remaining. The Captains (18-1, 12-0 CAC) added two late free throws and FSU trailed by nine, 40-31, at intermission.
Frostburg further trimmed its deficit to seven points when senior Shawn Henson hit a layup just 27 seconds into the second half.
However, CNU answered with a 14-0 run that extended its lead to 54-33 just past five minutes into the second half. The Captains continued the surge and pushed their lead to 31, 67-36 with 9:40 to play and again at 71-40 with 7:52 left.
Frostburg narrowed the final deficit to just 11 after outscoring Christopher Newport 30-11 over the final 7:40. Senior Torrell Goodman started the run for Frostburg with a jumped at 7:40 and Smoot followed it up with four three-pointers over the final 6:44.
Free throws and points in the paint helped CNU to the win as it outscored Frostburg in the paint 42-16 and managed 26-of-39 free throws. Tim Daly led the visitors in scoring with 20 points, behind 12-of-14 foul shots.
The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday when host Penn State Harrisburg at 8:00 pm.
