ALTOONA, Pa. – The Frostburg women's basketball team used a strong third-quarter effort to defeat Penn State Altoona, 90-79, Monday night.
The Bobcats (2-6) finished with four players in double figures, including three starters and shot 35.7 percent (30-of-84) from the field. FSU also forced 25 Lion turnovers and turned them into 34 points. The Bobcat bench outscored PSA 39-8 behind a team-high 18 points from junior Sharyce Warren.
Frostburg trailed by one at halftime, 42-41, and outscored Penn State Altoona (1-4) 27-17 in the third frame to grab a 68-59 lead heading into the fourth.
Freshman Amanda Emory started the third quarter with a jumper at 9:04 and senior Kirsten Rayner made a layup on a fastbreak 30 seconds later as Frostburg led 45-44.
Altoona rebounded with back-to-back three-pointers moments later that put it ahead 54-48.
However, Frostburg answered with a 20-5 run over the final 4:57 of the third. Warren and freshman Victoria Diggs started the run with layups at 4:57 and 3:53.
Freshman Victoria Yoder hit a jumper at 2:49 for a 56-55 advantage, a lead Frostburg wouldn't relinquish. Inside the final minute of the third quarter, Warren and sophomore Megan Kelly made two-straight three-pointers as the visitors led 68-57.
In the fourth, Emory connected on a jumper midway through the frame as Frostburg grabbed its largest lead of the ballgame at 17, 80-63.
Frostburg continued to hold its lead above 10 points over the remainder of the game for the 90-79 final.
To go along with her 18 points, Warren also grabbed six boards and notched five steals. Rayner led the starters with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Kelly (12 pts.) and junior Alexis Welch (10 pts.) rounded out the three starters in double figures.
The Lions finished with four starters in double figures behind a game-high 19 points from Megan Wheeler. Brittany Boslet added 17 points with three three-pointers.
Frostburg returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Penn State Harrisburg at 6:00 pm.
