DOVER, Del. – Junior Tyler Michael poured in 19 points, but the Frostburg State men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 80-59 road contest against Wesley Sunday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play.
Frostburg (1-8, 0-4) was unable to withstand 54 second half points from Wesley (3-4, 2-1), who outscored the Bobcats 33-15 in the final 10:36 of the game.
Michael was the only Bobcat to finish in double figures, but sophomore forward Edwin Cole notched nine points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Freshman guard Lawrence Pettis, Jr. had two assists and freshman guard Rhashad Johnson collected two steals. Junior center Zachary Coalmon registered three of the Bobcats' four blocks on the day.
Frostburg began the game shooting 7-of-10 (70%) from the field and 3-of-3 (100%) from three-point range.
Johnson made a three-pointer at the 16:15 mark in the first half, followed by a jumper nearly one minute later to put the Bobcats up 7-6.
Junior forward Christopher Coston drained a three-pointer with 4:09 remaining in the opening half to give the Bobcats 22-17 edge. The five-point lead was the largest of the half for either team.
The Bobcats took a 30-26 lead into the locker room at the half, after Michael connected on a three-pointer with just four seconds remaining. Michael ended the first half scoring the final five points. Frostburg shot 12-of-26 (42.6%) in the opening half of play and went 5-of-8 (62.5%) from beyond the arc.
The contest had seven ties and 13 lead changes.
Momentum shifted in the second stanza when Wesley began to pull away, shooting 60% in the second half while forcing nine Bobcat turnovers.
A pair of foul shots from junior Dalton Gaus cut the Wesley lead to one (46-45) with 10:37 remaining in the game, but the Wolverines would respond with a 14-2 run beginning at the 9:00 minute mark to take a 13-point lead.
Michael closed out the afternoon with the final 10 points for the Bobcats.
Wesley had four players finish in double figures. JW Lawson notched a game-high 21 points.
Frostburg will return to the court on Tuesday, December 20 for an exhibition clash with Virginia Military Institute. Tipoff from Lexington, Va. is set for 7:00 p.m.
