FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Senior Kirsten Rayner and junior Alexis Welch each finished with 10 points as the Frostburg women's basketball team dropped its CAC opener to 17
th-ranked Mary Washington, 65-43, Wednesday night.
The Bobcats (1-5, 0-1 CAC) scored the game's first points when senior Kache Fields hit a jumper 35 seconds into action for a quick 2-0 lead.
Mary Washington (5-0, 1-0 CAC) answered with the game's next 10 points for a 12-2 cushion over the next six and a half minutes.
Rayner knocked down a jumper at 2:29 to end UMW's run and sophomore Megan Kelly hit a jumper with 1:31 showing as the hosts led 17-6 after the first quarter.
Frostburg had a strong second quarter as Rayner and Fields each made a basket to open the frame and trim the deficit to 17-10.
The Bobcats continued the surge as three-pointers from freshman Amanda Emory (8:02), Kelly (6:38) and Fields (4:08) kept them within striking distance and down by just four, 23-19.
Back-to-back baskets from Welch and junior Sharyce Warren pulled Frostburg to within two points at 25-23 with 2:10 left in the half. Mary Washington closed the half with the final three points for a 28-23 lead at intermission.
Welch opened third-quarter action with a pair of free throws, but the Eagles scored the third quarter's next 26 points for a 54-25 lead after three.
Welch scored six of her 10 points in the fourth quarter that helped Frostburg pull to within 21 points with just over a minute to play in regulation before UMW hit a free throw for the 65-43 final score.
Rayner just missed a double-double with nine rebounds to go along with her 10 points. Welch added five rebounds and three assists, while Kelly had eight points behind two three-pointers.
Brianne Comden led the Eagles with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting and Taylor Barton scored 12.
Frostburg will travel to 11
th-ranked Christopher Newport this Saturday at 2:00 pm.
