FROSTBURG, Md. – With a chance to take the lead in the final moments, the Frostburg State women's basketball team lost a narrow 65-64 decision to Juniata in non-conference action Tuesday night at Bobcat Arena.
Senior forward Kirsten Rayner attempted a game-winning layup from the left block as time expired, but the shot caromed away as the final horn sounded.
The contest was back-and-forth throughout the evening, including 10 ties and 11 lead changes.
Juniata (3-2) took the lead, 65-64, with twelve seconds remaining on a layup by Rachel Anstine. Anstine was fouled on the made basket, and she converted the and-one free throw opportunity to seal the win for the Eagles.
Frostburg, now 1-4 on the season, shot 38.8% (26-67) on the evening. The Bobcats also shot 44.4% (8-18) from beyond the arc and 50% (4-8) from the charity stripe.
Four players reached double-figures in scoring, led by Rayner, who had a team-high 14 points. Sophomore guard Megan Kelly had 13 points, junior forward Alexis Welch notched 12 points and sophomore guard Victoria Diggs tallied 11 points.
Three-pointers from Kelly and Diggs and two layups from Rayner helped the Bobcats to a 13-point lead midway through the second quarter, but Juniata responded with a 15-3 run to close out the half.
No team extended the lead to more than four points in the second half of play.
The Bobcats held the edge in assists, 17-15, and also committed fewer turnovers than the Eagles.
Frostburg will open up Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play with a road contest at Mary Washington on Wednesday, November 30. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
