NORFOLK, Va. – Frostburg State grabbed an early lead against N.C. Wesleyan in the second round of the Marlin Tip-Off Tournament at Virginia Wesleyan College, Saturday, but endured a 90-71 loss to the Battling Bishops.
The Bobcats settle at 1-2 on the season with their second loss at Virginia Wesleyan. The win is the first of the campaign for N.C. Wesleyan.
Junior Dalton Gaus led the Bobcats with 14 points, including the game's opening three-pointer that handed Frostburg its only lead of the afternoon. He added four rebounds and three assists.
Junior Tyler Michael scored in double figures for the third time this season with 12 points, while junior Gregory Gibbs led a strong Bobcat bench with 10 points. Frostburg outscored Wesleyan 34-10 in bench points.
Sophomore Edwin Cole also came off the bench to notch nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Adrian Moore led all players with 30 points for the Battling Bishops. Justin Tankelewicz added 22 points behind five three-pointers.
N.C. Wesleyan finished 10-of-20 from three-pointer range, including eight three's in the first half as it led by 11 points, 27-16, just past the midway point on the opening half.
With just under six minutes to go in the half, Tankelewicz hit a jumper that gave NCWC a 40-20 lead and Wesleyan held a 55-30 lead at the break.
In the second half, Wesleyan built its lead to 30 points and held it around that mark for much of the frame. Frostburg closed out the contest on a 12-3 run that was started with a three-pointer from Gaus that closed the final score at 90-71.
Frostburg State returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Waynesburg at 7:00 pm.
