Bobcats Hit Century Mark In Opener

FROSTBURG, Md. – Tyler Michael kicked off his junior season with a career-high 32 points and Frostburg State ran away from Mount Aloysius to the tune of 110-88 in the season opener for both schools, Tuesday.

The Bobcats open the season at 1-0 with their first 100-point game since the 2009-10 season. On Feb. 20 of that season, FSU notched 111 points against Hilbert, while a night later, Frostburg poured in 102 against D'Youville. Both were wins for the Bobcats.

On Tuesday, Michael's 32 points were impressive but so was his shooting performance as he finished 16-of-18 from the floor (88.8%). He added five assists, five rebounds and two steals.

Michael powered the Bobcats with 22 second-half points as they shot 61.7 percent (29-of-47) from the floor and tallied 60 points after leading 50-39 at halftime.

Junior Christopher Coston and sophomore Edwin Cole each added 12 points to round out the three players in double figures for Frostburg. Coston finished with three assists, while Cole added eight rebounds.

Frostburg held a decisive advantage in points in the paint 80-44 and turned 27 Mountie turnovers in to 31 points.

Despite Frostburg's 22-point victory, the two teams went back-and-forth in the first half until Michael flushed a dunk with 8:46 left in the first and Frostburg never trailed again.

Michael hit back-to-back layups at 8:27 and 7:57 as FSU pushed its lead to 26-21. With the clock closing in on 1:00 remaining in the opening half, freshman Daniel Alexander made a layup, freshman Lawrence Pettis, Jr. knocked down a three-pointer and Cole made a layup as the Bobcats held an 11-point cushion at the break.

Frostburg started to slowly pull away in the second half as it grabbed a 21-point edge, 66-45, when Coston hit a layup less than five minutes into play.

With 5:43 to play in the second half, sophomore Steven Glasbrenner connected on a three-pointer to give Frostburg its largest lead of the evening thus far, a 23-point advantage at 94-71.

Frostburg hit 100 points on the night with a Michael layup at 4:22 and its largest lead of the game came moments later when Alexander hit a layup at 3:41 for a 104-79 lead.

Mt. Aloysius was led in scoring by Troy Williams and Jourdan Lamberth, each with 14 points, while Tre Brown added 12.

Frostburg returns to action this Friday at the Marlin Tip-Off Tournament when it faces host Virginia Wesleyan at 7:00 pm.
