Men's Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision Against CNU

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's soccer team fell in a hotly contested Capital Athletic Conference matchup at home, 2-1, to Christopher Newport on Saturday night.

Yellow cards became the story of the match as there were six cautions shown to the teams, with each side receiving three.

Christopher Newport (11-2, 4-0) had the better of the opportunities in the first half, outshooting Frostburg State (6-7, 2-2) 6-1. In total CNU outshot FSU 13-5.

Stephen Durbin opened the scoring for Christopher Newport in the 22nd minute when he was able to get on the end of a low driven cross from Andrew Gogolin and knock it into the empty net of senior Hassan Mostafa, who had come off his line to cut off the cross.

Six minutes later tempers would start to flare as David Eddleton would see the first caution of the night for a tackle from behind. Fifteen minutes later FSU head coach Keith Byrnes was shown a bench yellow for arguing with the officials after a physical run of play didn't see any fouls called.

The Bobcats would go into halftime trailing 1-0.

FSU would come quickly out of the gate to start the second half when junior Mukor Harris headed a bouncing ball off of a long throw past CNU keeper Zach Pedini in the 53rd minute to tie the match at 1-1. Christopher Newport would strike back just 30 seconds later when Zachary Ballard placed a right footed strike from 20 yards out into to top left corner of the net just out of reach of the outstretched arms of Mostafa.

The yellow card would come out again in the 52nd minute when Jordan Boone was cautioned for a strong tackle on Bobcats sophomore Ernie Williams.

Tensions would boil over in the 72nd minute when CNU's Patrick Burns was called for a late foul on Bobcats freshman Kyle Wilson. Williams came to the support of his teammate Wilson and after an altercation with Burns both players would be issued yellow cards.

Harris would enter the official's book just 90 seconds later for a late challenge.

On the night Mostafa would make three saves while Pedini would be forced to make two for the Captains.

The Bobcats will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 7:00 pm when they host CAC rival York.
