FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's soccer team picked up its first tie of the season against Capital Athletic Conference foe, York (Pa.), in a scoreless, 0-0, match Wednesday evening.
The Bobcats (6-7-1, 2-2-1) played a tough defensive match against York (4-7-2, 1-3-1) however; neither team could find the net in all 110 minutes of play.
York seemed to dominate the field, outshooting the Bobcats 22-7, but the FSU defense including senior keeper Hassan Mostafa shutout the Spartans from reaching the back of the goal. Mostafa picked up a season-high 12 saves on the night, besting his previous nine saves against St. Mary's (Md.) earlier this season.
The first half remained even, with York holding a 6-2 advantage in shots. Sophomore Brett Basham had an opportunity in the 17
th minute of play when he jumped up for a header in front of the goal however, Spartan goalie Charlie Johnson managed to pick up the save.
Frostburg had a few opportunities in the second half despite being outshot, 11-4, including a shot from freshman Matt Morris that hit the post in the 65
th minute. Senior Nabayee Tesfu had a header in the 86
th minute that fell into the hands of York's Johnson. The game remained knotted, 0-0, at the end of regulation.
In 10 minutes of the first overtime, neither team managed to get a shot off, as the game remained scoreless and sent into second overtime.
In the second overtime, York had an opportunity off a corner kick in the 106
th minute when three Spartans, Marc Murgo, Cristobal Corvalan and Nathan Bilbie, each took a shot on goal; however, Mostafa was able to knock away all three.
Morris took the last shot of the game, however, the ball slipped wide of the net and the game ended, 0-0.
The Bobcats will return to action Saturday, October 15
th when they travel to Salisbury for a conference match set to start at noon.
