Women’s Soccer Slides Past UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The connection of junior Melanie Bell and freshman Brooke Shehade netted Frostburg's only goal in a 1-0 shutout of Mary Washington in a key CAC match, Wednesday.

The win improves the Bobcats' overall record to 5-7 and pushes them to 2-1 in league play.

The victory snaps a small two-game losing skid for Frostburg and is the seventh contest this fall in which Bell or Shehade has registered a point. It also marks the second-straight game in which Bell has found the net.

On Wednesday, the game remained locked at 0-0 until the clock showed 7:59 left in regulation. Shehade found Bell with a through ball and Bell slotted a shot past Mary Washington keeper Haley Randall for the 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats attempted to increase their lead in the closing minutes as they took three shots inside the final five minutes. Two of those attempts were saved by Randall and the final horn sounded at 1-0.

FSU was outshot in the game 13-12, but the Bobcats came out firing with two of the contest's first three shots. Randall again made back-to-back saves to keep the contest tied in the early going.

Bobcat sophomore Rhianna Lapen registered her first complete-game shutout as she notched five saves in 90 minutes of action. No the other end, Randall finished with five saves and the one goal allowed.

Frostburg returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Christopher Newport at 5:00 pm.
