FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's soccer team dropped its first Capital Athletic Conference game of the season to Mary Washington, 3-1, at Bobcat Stadium Wednesday evening.
Despite the Eagles (8-2, 3-0) only holding a one shot advantage, 12-11, over the Bobcats (6-6, 2-1), UMW managed to slip two late goals past FSU to earn the victory and remain undefeated in CAC play.
Mary Washington got onto the board early in the first half, at the 13 minute mark, when a long ball from UMW's Collin Travis found Ryan Van Maanen 20 yards out, Maanen was able to beat the FSU defender to launch a ball past FSU keeper junior Hassan Mostafa into the top right of the net, to go up , 1-0.
However, the Bobcats rallied back less than two minutes later when sophomore Kelvin Tata made a right side cross to find sophomore Ernie Williams. Williams shot the ball into the left side of the net to pick up his fourth goal of the season and tie the game, 1-1.
UMW outshot the Bobcats 4-2 in the remaining minutes of the half, but could not find the back of the net as the game remained tied at one going into the half.
FSU outshot Mary Washington, 7-6, in the second half of play but the Eagles managed to slip two goals by Mostafa to earn the win.
UMW scored off a free kick by Gabriel Soriano that found Riley Fisher to give the Eagles' a 2-1 lead in the 54
th minute of play.
The final goal came in the 73
rd minute when UMW goal keeper Matt Spencer launched a long kick that found Jacob Burke. Burke beat an FSU defender and Mostafa to earn the final goal of the game and give Mary Washington the 3-1 win.
FSU had opportunities late in the half to try to tie the game, including a free kick that found freshman Ronnie Sotelo. Sotelo shot into the hands of the UMW keeper. Seven minutes later, freshman Mitchell Love beat his defenders for a shot that was stopped by UMW's Spencer.
Mostafa played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bobcats and tallied three saves, while UMW's Spencer saw 90:00 minutes in goal with seven saves on the night.
