HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Bobcats men's soccer team took down the Penn St. Harrisburg Lions for the second time this season behind a goal and an assist from sophomore striker Carvell Akuffo.
It didn't take Frostburg State (9-9-1, 4-4-1) long to open the scoring in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament, the Bobcats found the back of the net within the first minute. Right from the opening kickoff, the Bobcats won a corner kick and freshman Mitchell Love swung in a ball that was knocked on goal by junior Mukor Harris but saved by PSU Harrisburg keeper Brandon Hoover. Hoover was only able to parry the shot away and the ball fell to Akuffo who found the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season.
The two sides were even on shots through the first 45 minutes with three each but the Bobcats held the advantage in corners 2-0, leading to the only goal of the first half.
The Bobcats would get on the board again in the 78
th minute when Penn St. Harrisburg (11-8, 5-4) put the ball into their own net to give FSU a 2-0 lead with 12 minutes to go.
Harrisburg would strike back quickly. Alex Panuccio would score his first of two on the afternoon in the 78
th minute to pull the Lions back within one.
50 seconds after the Harrisburg goal Harris would take a pass from Akuffo and slot a shot past Hoover for his second goal on the year and give the Bobcats their two goal lead back, 3-1, with just 11 minutes left on the clock.
The scoring wouldn't end there. Panuccio would get his second of the afternoon for the Lions in the 89
th minute to pull Harrisburg back within one but his efforts wouldn't be enough to top the Bobcats who win by the final of 3-2.
In total the Bobcats were outshot by the Lions 8-6 on the afternoon but three saves from senior keeper Hassan Mostafa were enough to earn him his ninth victory of the season.
With the win FSU advances to the semi-finals of the CAC men's soccer tournament where they will take on the top seeded Christopher Newport Captains in Newport News, Va. on Tuesday, November 1
st. The start time for the match will be announced early in the week.
