BUENA VISTA, Va. – Senior Hendrik de Wit scored the game-winning goal in the 71st minute to lift the Frostburg men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Southern Virginia, Wednesday evening.
De Wit's goal was his first of the season and it couldn't have come at a better time. The victory was Frostburg's eighth of the season (8-9-1, 4-4-1), but lifted them from seventh place into fifth in the final CAC regular-season standings.
The fifth-place finish means the Bobcats are the fifth seed in the upcoming CAC Tournament and they will travel to Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday for the opening round.
De Wit led the Bobcats with three shots and two shots on goal. At 69:03, de Wit had a shot saved by keeper Keenan Carroll. At 70:24, de Wit took a corner kick that deflected off a defender and into the goal for the 2-1 Bobcats lead.
In the first half, junior Rodrigo Valenzuela put Frostburg on the board with the contest's first shot. His attempt came at 6:42 and gave FSU a 1-0 cushion.
The Knights (3-14, 1-8) evened things at one goal apiece in the 25th minute when Tyler Mcelwee scored off an assist from Carlos Munoz.
Less than a minute later, Frostburg had back-to-back corner kicks but couldn't find the net, while at 40:45 freshman Josh McRobie had a shot saved by Carroll to keep things at 1-1 at intermission.
Frostburg held a 9-6 lead in shot and a commanding 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior keeper Hassan Mostafa needed just one save for his eighth win of the season.
