FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team posted its first five-set victory, in a 3-2 win over Mount Aloysius, Wednesday evening.
The Bobcats (10-15, 1-4 CAC) cruised to a 25-17 win in the first set of the match; however a scrappy Mt. Aloysius team rebounded to win sets two and three, 25-22 and 25-22. However, the Bobcats did not give up and came back to win the fourth and fifth sets, 25-20 and 15-8.
The Bobcats outperformed the Mounties in almost every statistical category on the night including an advantage in kill, 63-49, blocks, 13-5 and assists, 58-46. Mt. Aloysius pulled away with more service aces, 9-6, and digs, 108-101.
Junior Madelyn Torres posted her first career double-double; as she tallied 11 kills and 19 digs on defense. She also led the team with 46 assists. Junior Naya Cheatem handed out 19 kills on offense while freshman Kathryn Lough collected 26 digs and her classmate Biamba Tshitenge notched eight blocks. Senior Kayla Porter finished third on the team in digs (15) and assists (3), turning in a season-best performance.
The Bobcats controlled the first set right from the start, using a seven-point rally to gain a 12-5 advantage. Cheatem tallied three kills in a six-point FSU rally to extend the Bobcat lead, 18-7. FSU remained ahead the rest of the set and Torres collected the final point of the set with a kill.
FSU held a 4-1 lead in to start set two, however, the Mounties came back to tie it, 7-7. The Bobcats took a 16-13 lead in the middle of the set, but Mount Aloysius scored the final five points to win, 26-24.
The Mounties held the lead for most of the third set, but the Bobcats remained relentless and used a five-point rally to bring the score within one, 18-17. Mount Aloysius scored six of the last seven points of the set to win, 25-22.
The fourth set featured eight ties, as neither team could gain a significant lead throughout. The Bobcats outlasted the Mounties as they scored the last three points of the set to win, 25-20, to force the game into a fifth set.
The Bobcats used two four-point rallies to pull out a 15-8 victory in the fifth set. Tshitenge tallied three kills and one solo block, as the Bobcats picked up their 10
th victory of the season.
Next up, Frostburg State will host the Frostburg Tri-Tournament Saturday, October 22. FSU will face St. Mary's (Md.) in the first game of the tournament at 11 am.
