FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg freshman Brooke Shehade scored a pair of goals in a four-minute stretch and freshman Gwen Schemm later added an insurance tally to lift the Bobcats to a 3-0 shutout of Penn State Harrisburg, Wednesday.
It marks the third-straight win for the Bobcats, all via shutout, but more importantly, keeps Frostburg in the hunt for a home game in the opening round of the CAC Tournament.
The Bobcats (8-8, 5-2 CAC) currently sit in third place with two games remaining and could possibly make it to second place in the league and secure a first-round bye in the tournament. If Frostburg remains in third, it will host a first-round game on Saturday, Oct. 29.
Shehade tried to put Frostburg on the board inside the first minute of play as she dribbled the ball right from the opening whistle to the Harrisburg goal. Her shot, however, was saved by keeper Kayla Arnold.
Shehade broke through with the game's first tally at 30:21 when she ripped a left footed attempt into the top right corner of the net off a feed from freshman Jesse Dunagan.
At 34:43, Shehade made it 2-0 for the Bobcats with her sixth goal of the season with another hard, left-footed shot into the right side of the net. This time, the assist came from junior Katie Broadhurst.
The score remained 2-0 at the half and the Bobcats tried to quickly add to their lead in the second stanza. Sophomore Danielle Ferris attempted a shot three minutes into action that forced another save by Arnold to keep things at 2-0.
Frostburg posted five more shots before freshman Gwen Schemm made it a 3-0 final. She knocked home a shot from roughly 25 yards that carried into the top left corner of the net past Arnold. It was Schemm's first career goal and came off a pass from freshman Kelly Richards.
Reigning CAC Defensive Player of the Week Rhianna Lapen finished with three saves for her third-consecutive CAC shutout. She hasn't allowed a goal since Oct. 8. Arnold finished with five saves in the loss.
Frostburg returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Marymount for senior day at 5:00 pm.
