Volleyball Falls To No. 14 CNU

FROSTBURG, Md. – In a Capital Athletic Conference showdown, the Frostburg State volleyball team dropped in three sets, 3-0, to nationally-ranked No. 14 Christopher Newport, Saturday afternoon.

Despite dropping all three sets, FSU (8-11, 0-2) challenged the No.14 Captains (15-4, 2-0) in every set and took the second set into extra points before falling, 29-27. CNU slipped passed the Bobcats 25-20 in set one and 25-21 in set three.

The Bobcats held the advantage in digs 59-56 over the visitors, however CNU topped FSU in kills, 51-43, blocks, 5-4, and assists, 46-42.

Junior Naya Cheatem collected 18 kills, while her classmate Chelsea Parrinello tallied nine. Junior Madelyn Torres finished the day with 31 assists and junior Lindsey Scepura had an impressive showing on defensive with 17 digs.

Set one opened with both team exchanging points back-and-forth with neither team gaining more than a two-point advantage. CNU began to pull away with an 11-8 lead, however the Bobcats came back to tie the set at 13.  The set tied two more times before the Captains managed to seal a 25-20 victory.

The Captains surged into set two with a 7-1 lead, however the Bobcats remained relentless and used a four-point rally to bring the game within three, 10-7. A kill from Cheatem knotted the set at 16, followed by a kill from Parrinello that tied the set again at 18. CNU used a three-point rally to go up, 21-18, but the Bobcats once again clawed their way back into the set and tied it at 24. The set went into extra points and tied three more times before CNU scored back-to-back points to win 29-27.

Set three proved to be another tough battle, as the set tied seven times and neither team led by more than four points. The Bocbats opened the set with a one-point, 9-8 advantage but the Captains used a five-point rally to surge ahead. However, FSU came back to score four-unanswered points to bring the set within one, 16-15. In the end, CNU managed to slip past FSU and win the final set, 25-21.

Next up, FSU will travel to Southern Virginia Friday, September 7th for a match set to start at 6:00 PM.
