ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Despite a second quarter surge, the Frostburg State women's basketball team lost a close game to Capital Athletic Conference rival St. Mary's (Md.), 74-68, Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats (2-9, 0-5 CAC) outscored St. Mary's (3-9, 1-4 CAC) 18-9 and 20-17 in the second and third quarters respectively, however it was not enough to overcome the Seahawk offense in the end.
Freshman Megan Kelly led the Bobcat offense with 22 points, while senior Courtney Young posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Freshman Alanah Roy made a layup early in the first quarter to put the Bobcats ahead 2-0, however the Seahawks went on a 14 point run to go up 14-2 over FSU and stayed in control the rest of the first quarter to extend their lead 22-10.
The Bobcats started the second quarter scoring nine unanswered points over the Seahawks to bring the game within two points with five minutes to go.
Kelly made a three-pointer and a layup back-to-back to keep the game within two, 25-27, late in the second. A free throw from junior Keri Hudson brought the Bobcats within one point, 26-27, but St.
Mary's made two free throws and a layup to go up 28-31 over FSU at halftime.
Young and Roy both made layups at the start of the third quarter to keep the pressure on St. Mary's and keep the game within one point.
Junior Kirsten Rayner made a layup in the seventh minute of the third quarter to tie the game at 39-39.
Back-to-back three pointers from Kelly gave the Bobcats their first lead of the game, going up 46-45 late in the third quarter. A layup from Hudson pushed the Bobcats lead to three; however, a Seahawk jump shot and a free throw in the final minute of the quarter tied the game, 48-48.
Kelly made two more three-pointers to help FSU surge to lead 56-50 over the Seahawks early in the fourth quarter. However, the Seahawk offense remained relentless and came back to tie the game 59-59 in the middle of the fourth quarter.
St. Mary's scored eight unanswered points to extend to a seven point lead over the Bobcats.
Kelly made her sixth three-pointer of the day to bring the Bobcats within three. However, it wasn't enough as the Seahawks rallied late in the fourth quarter to come up with the win.
St. Mary's Nina Haller ended the day with 20 points and 10 rebounds while her teammate Kerri Cline finished with 18 points and six rebounds.
The Bobcats will return to play at home Wednesday, January 13 when they play host to Southern Virginia at 6:00 pm.
