FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior forward Kirsten Rayner posted her sixth double-double this season, but it wasn't enough as the Frostburg State women's basketball team fell to Southern Virginia, 77-75, Wednesday evening at Bobcat Arena.
Rayner had help from junior Kache Fields and sophomore Adjowa Pinkrah, who both tallied 12 points each, but the Bobcats (2-11, 0-7 Capital Athletic Conference) didn't have enough time left on the clock to continue their late game rally against the Knights (3-10, 2-5 CAC).
The first quarter alone saw the score tied three times and five lead changes in the back-and-forth battle, and despite the Knights taking two five-point advantages inside the final 1:15 of the opening quarter, a layup by Rayner cut the hosts' deficit to three, 20-17, heading into the first intermission.
Fields opened up scoring in the second quarter with a jumper from freshman Megan Kelly and six-straight Bobcat points put FSU ahead, 25-20 with 5:20 to go before halftime. Southern Virginia's Larissa Macfarlane then hit two baskets to cut the red and black's lead back to just one, 25-24.
Both teams exchanged points and the lead, but it was FSU who took a 34-32 lead into halftime.
The Knights' Morgan Hartvigsen opened up the third quarter with a three-pointer to put the visitors ahead, 35-34, and Southern Virginia led for the eight minutes until Pinkrah hit two free throws to knot the game at 48-48.
A layup from SVU's Shelby Winsor gave the Knights a slim lead, but a three from Kelly gave the Bobcats a 51-50 advantage with 1:44 to go in the third. Both teams exchanged baskets again, and a layup from Pinkrah knotted the game for the 10
th time, 55-55, heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter saw continuous back-to-back scoring action, with the 15
th tie at 73-73 with 55 seconds showing on the clock. Down three with nine seconds remaining, freshman Jasmin Tirado-Viscalla hit a layup to bring the game back within one, 76-75, but following a Bobcat foul, Southern Virginia's Autumn Cramer made a free throw to give the visitors their final 77-75 victory.
Winsor posted a double-double for the guests with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Merideth Quellette and Macfarlane each had 16 points for the Knights.
The Bobcats travel to Wesley on Saturday, January 16 for a 1:00 pm conference matchup.
