FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior Kirsten Rayner nearly had a double-double, but it wasn't enough to help the Frostburg State women's basketball team as it fell to Marymount (Va.) in a Capital Athletic Conference matchup, 68-34, Wednesday evening at Bobcat Arena.
Rayner led the Bobcats (2-9, 0-5 CAC) with 11 points and seven rebounds while freshman Megan Kelly added eight points and three boards in the loss. Marymount (Va.) improves to 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the league.
FSU kept the game close in the first quarter, tying the game three times in the opening six minutes. The Saints' Nicole Viscuso then made a layup and a jumper to give the visitors a slim, four-point lead, 10-6, that they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the game. Down five, 15-10 with 33 seconds to play in the opening 10 minutes, senior Courtney Young found junior Kache Fields to bring the game back within reach and head into the second quarter down three, 15-12.
Two made free throws from Kelly kept the game within four, 20-16, with eight minutes before the half, but two consecutive three-pointers from Marymount's Leah Hurst propelled the visitors to a 13-4 run to close out the first half with a 33-20 lead.
The Bobcats opened the third quarter with baskets from Young and Fields, but the Saints came back with a 12-4 run to stretch their lead to 45-28 with 3:45 left in the third. Marymount doubled FSU's remaining points in the quarter, using an 8-4 run to take a 53-32 advantage into the final 10 minutes.
Both teams were held scoreless for nearly two minutes before Abby Fisher hit a three to give the Saints a 24-point lead. A final 14-2 streak put Marymount ahead 68-34 at the final buzzer.
Marymount's Viscuso led all players with 20 points and nine rebounds while teammate Miranda Krott added 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Bobcats hit the road Saturday, January 9 for a conference showdown with St. Mary's (Md.) at 2:00 pm.
