ARLINGTON, Va. – Despite a third quarter surge, the Frostburg State women's basketball team was overpowered by Capital Athletic Conference foe Marymount (Va.), 79-35, Saturday afternoon.
Junior guard Kirsten Rayner led the Bobcats with 19 points and six rebounds, with nine of those points coming in the third quarter, but it wasn't enough to help the Bobcats (3-15, 0-11 CAC) past Marymount (Va.) (15-3, 10-1 CAC).
The Saints took an 8-0 run in the first quarter and led 21-7 heading into the first intermission. Another quick 8-0 streak pushed the hosts ahead, 29-7, in the opening minutes of the second before FSU answered back with a made free throw and layup from freshman guard Jasmin Tirado-Viscalla. Marymount closed out the first half with three layups to take a 39-12 lead into the locker room.
FSU matched MU basket-for-basket coming out of intermission, but a 9-4 run in the closing minutes lifted the Saints 60-26 heading into the final quarter. Marymount then took a 15-3 streak to close out the final 10 minutes and seal a final 79-35 win.
Freshman guard Megan Kelly added seven points for the Bobcats and senior forward Courtney Young chipped in seven boards and three blocks.
Marymount's Nicole Viscuso led all players with 20 points, while teammate Kievanna Lacey added 18 points for the Saints.
The Bobcats return home Monday, February 1 when they face Christopher Newport at 4:30 pm.
