YORK, Pa. – The Frostburg State men's basketball team snapped a two-game losing skid with a 59-53 victory over York (Pa.), Wednesday evening.
The Bobcats (6-10, 4-5 Capital Athletic Conference) were led by a 17-point performance from sophomore Tyler Michael, who was 7-for-12 in field goals and took down four rebounds. Senior Shawn Henson added eight points and six rebounds while classmate James Peters finished with nine points.
The loss drops York (Pa.) to 7-9 overall and 3-6 in league play.
The Bobcats led wire to wire as they opened up the first half with an early 6-0 advantage and never relinquished their lead.
It took the Spartans nearly three and a half minutes to get on the board, but FSU never relented and led by as many as 10 twice during the first half. Back-to-back layups from freshman Edwin Cole and senior Nick Smoot gave Frostburg its first 10-point lead, 14-4, with 13:48 to go before the half.
York rallied back with a three from Brad Wesner and a layup from Blayde Reich, but the Bobcats pushed the lead back to 10, 25-15, with 6:49 showing on the clock.
York's Matt Scamuffo sandwiched two three-pointers around a layup from Zack Galic to bring the game back within two, 25-23, but Frostburg kept pounding and took a five-point lead into halftime, 31-26.
Frostburg came out of the locker room firing and took off on a 10-0 run behind a layup from sophomore Zachary Coalmon, a trey from Smoot, and a back-to-back layup-three pointer combo from Michael to give the Bobcats their largest lead of the game, 41-26, with 17:10 to play.
Scamuffo hit another shot from outside the arc, but a jumper from Michael and a layup from sophomore Christopher Coston kept the hosts at bay and the Bobcats' 15-point lead intact, 45-30, with 13:31 to go.
The Spartans jumped on a 13-2 run to close the gap back to two, 52-50, following a four-point play from Scamuffo after being fouled on a made three-pointer.
The Bobcats never lost sight of their goal and was 7-for-9 at the free throw line down the stretch to put the game out of reach and take home the final 59-53 victory.
Scamuffo finished with 19 points behind five three-pointers for York, while Reich finished with a double-double for the Spartans (14 points, 10 rebounds).
The Bobcats return to action Saturday, January 23 when they play host to No. 10 Christopher Newport at 3:00 pm.
