LATROBE, Pa. – The Frostburg State volleyball team endured a pair of five-set marathons on day two of the Saint Vincent Tournament, Saturday. The Bobcats outlasted a tough Carlow squad for a 3-2 victory before narrowly losing to Wooster, 3-2.
In the first match against Carlow, the Bobcats trailed the Celtics twice following the first and third sets. However, Frostburg won sets four (25-17) and five (15-13) to take the match. The Bobcats boasted a .333 hitting percentage in the second set and a .444 hitting percentage in the fourth set.
Frostburg held the advantage in kills (60-56), service aces (11-10), blocks (17-4), assists (60-46) and digs (85-82). Led by sophomores, the Bobcats' Naya Cheatem paced both teams with 21 kills, while she and classmates Jessica Bugtong and Sabrina Roberts all tallied four aces. Sophomores Madelyn Torres posted 55 assists and Lindsey Scepura added 25 digs.
In the second and final match of the weekend for the Bobcats, FSU dropped a close decision to Wooster despite leading after the first and third set. Frostburg jumped out to a 1-0 edge after a 25-17 game-one victory and led 2-1 following a 25-19 scored in the third game.
Despite leading in kills (60-44), aces (8-7) and assists (54-41), the Fighting Scots (5-0) rebounded to win the final two games for the match.
Cheatem (20 kills), Torres (50 assists), and Scepura (20 digs) all tallied game-high numbers.
Cheatem was named to the Bearcat All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the final game on Saturday.
The Bobcats (2-3) return to action Saturday, September 11 when they travel to Erie, Pa. for the Penn State Behrend Tournament. FSU squares off against Geneva at 5:30 pm and faces the hosts, Penn State Behrend, at 7:30 pm.
