Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Falls On First Day Of St. Vincent Tournament

LATROBE, Pa. – The Frostburg State volleyball team fell in a pair of matches on the opening day of the St. Vincent Tournament, falling to Muskingum, 3-0, and dropping a close-fought match to Franciscan, 3-2.

The Bobcats came back from a 12-10 deficit in the first set to score six-straight points and take a 16-12 lead, but the back-and-forth set ultimately went to the Fighting Muskies. The second and third sets were much the same with both the home team and visitors trading points, but Muskingum took advantage of two seven-point runs in both sets to hold off FSU and come away with a 3-0 victory.

A trio of sophomores led the Bobcats as Lindsey Scepura led both teams with 17 digs, while Madelyn Torres added 23 assists and Naya Cheatem posted 12 kills.

In the night cap against Franciscan, FSU earned a close 27-25 victory in the first set, dropped the next two, and followed with a five-point fourth set win (25-20), but ultimately fell in the fifth game by two points, 16-14. Despite leading the Barons in aces (10-7) and blocks (7-3), and keeping an even 87-87 in digs, it took Franciscan all five sets to sneak past the Bobcats.

Senior Amiee Petrides led both teams with 16 kills, while Cheatem (11) and sophomore Jessica Bugtong (9) heavily contributed to the Bobcats' cause. Scepura posted a game-high 33 digs and four service aces, while she and Petrides (3 aces) made up 70 percent of Frostburg's aces. Torres added a day-high 43 assists.

Frostburg returns to the court Saturday, September 5 when they face Carlow at 1:00 pm and Wooster at 3:00 pm to close out the St. Vincent Tournament.
