UNION, N. J. – The Frostburg State volleyball team opened the Kean Tournament with a victory against Baruch, 3-1, before falling to Olivet, 3-1, Friday night.
The Bobcats (10-9) used a four-set comeback to rally past the Bearcats (7-13) and stop a two-match losing skid.
FSU held the advantage in every statistical category, including kills (56-43), service aces (5-3), blocks (4-3), assists (48-41), and both teams held even in digs, 80-80. The Bobcats hit above .200 in both the second (.243) and third sets (.279) to help propel them to victory.
Despite falling in the first game, 25-21, Frostburg showed perseverance and came back to win the next three games to start the tournament off on a high note.
It was all red and black in the middle two sets as the Bobcats took eight of the final 11 points to hold off Baruch, 25-19, in the second game. FSU then raced out to an 11-4 lead in the third set and didn't allow the Bearcats to score more than three straight points en route to a 25-18 victory.
The fourth and final game, however, kept the Bobcats on their toes as Baruch used a late-game five-point rally to bury a 20-17 deficit and take a 22-20 lead. FSU came back with three consecutive points, but both teams traded the lead back and forth before the Bobcats came away with the final 29-27 win and the match.
Sophomore Naya Cheatem led both teams with 23 kills and two service aces while classmates Madelyn Torres (43 assists) and Lindsey Scepura (21 digs) contributed to the cause.
In the nightcap, the Bobcats took on Olivet. FSU again fell in the first set, 25-22, but rebounded with a 25-22 win in the second set to keep the match even at 1-1.
The Comets (11-5) stormed back to take the third set, 25-11, before going on to win the fourth set and the match, 25-10.
Senior Aimee Petrides led the Bobcats with 18 kills, while Torres finished with 31 assists and Scepura added 27 digs.
Frostburg opens day two of the Kean Tournament on Saturday, October 3 with a matchup against Trine at 12:00 pm and will close out the tournament by squaring off with Springfield at 2:00 pm.
