FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team picked up two more victories as they defeated both Marietta and Pitt-Greensburg in straight sets, Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.
The Bobcats, currently on a six-game winning streak, advance to 8-6 on the year while Marietta drops to 6-6 and UPG falls to 0-7.
FSU ultimately came out on top against Marietta, despite the Pioneers pressuring FSU in each of the sets.
Despite an 8-3 deficit in the beginning of the first set, the Bobcats chipped away and used a 7-0 rally to take a 15-12 lead. The Pioneers kept the game close, coming within one point, 24-23, before sophomore Jessica Bugtong killed a set from sophomore Madelyn Torres to give the hosts the final 25-23 win.
The second set was much the same, as the Bobcats and Pioneers tied nine times, including at 20-20, 24-24 and 25-25, before FSU picked up the final two points to take the 27-25 victory.
After falling 4-1 early in the third set, Frostburg came out and used a 15-2 run to jump ahead, 16-6, and never relinquished its lead en route to a 25-20 final set.
Frostburg led in all statistical categories, including kills (43-36), service aces (4-2), blocks (6-2), assists (38-32), and digs (79-72). Sophomore Naya Cheatem had 17 kills while Torres added 34 assists. Fellow sophomores Lindsey Scepura added 20 digs while Elizabeth Hawkesworth had a match-high four blocks.
In the nightcap against the fellow Bobcats from Pitt-Greensburg, FSU hit above .200 in all three sets (.219, .375, .333) and doubled up UPG in kills (40-21), while dominating in service aces (9-2), holding the advantage in assists (35-18) and digs (46-37), and earning all eight blocks of the match.
Frostburg picked up the final five points of the first set to take a decisive 25-16 win. The black and red never let the visitors score more than two consecutive points in game two, as Frostburg spiked its way to a 25-12 victory. In continuing fashion, FSU used a 14-3 streak to increase its 9-7 lead to come within two points (23-10) of victory. UPG added three points, but couldn't rally back and Frostburg finished the day with a 25-13 third-set win.
Senior Aimee Petrides finished the match with a game-high 12 kills and three aces. Cheatem added 11 kills, while Bugtong had five blocks. Torres contributed 32 assists and Scepura added 16 digs to round out the statistical leaders.
