FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team took two matches on the first day of the FSU Quad Match, first slipping past St. Vincent, 3-2, then powering past La Roche, 3-0, Saturday at Bobcat Arena.
The Bobcats (6-6 overall) took the first game by a slim 25-23 score, and dropped the second two sets, 25-18 and 25-20, before dominating sets four (25-15) and five (15-5).
The first set saw back-and-forth scoring before the Bobcats took off on a 13-3 run to go from three points down (10-7) to take a 20-13 advantage. The Bearcats (3-8 overall) then used an 8-2 run to come back within one (23-22), before the Bobcats put the match away. FSU boasted a .467 hitting percentage.
The Bearcats used an early 5-1 run to pull ahead of the Bobcats and scored the final five points to take the second set, 25-18. St. Vincent then chipped away in the third set and worked a 13-3 run to come within one game of defeating Frostburg, but the red and black never wavered.
The Bobcats showed perseverance and led the Bearcats the entire fourth set to even the match at 2-2 heading into the tiebreaker.
Frostburg then cruised to a 15-5 fifth-set victory and held the advantage in kills (57-55), service aces (10-4) and assists (53-49).
The sophomore class led the Bobcats statistically as Naya Cheatem tallied 23 kills, Lindsey Scepura finished with a match-high five service aces and 19 digs, while Madelyn Torres and Jessica Bugtong added three blocks each. Torres also added 48 assists in the win.
Following the marathon first match, the Bobcats rolled past La Roche (5-5 overall) in straight sets, 25-8, 25-18, 25-18.
FSU again led in almost every statistical category, including kills (42-25), service aces (8-3), blocks (3-2) and assists (36-25).
The Bobcats hit an impressive .483 hitting percentage in the first set and capitalized on 11 of the final 12 points to cruise to a 25-8 win.
The second set was more evenly matched as the Bobcats and the Redhawks tied six times before FSU clawed its way to the 25-18 victory that lifted them to two games to none.
In the final set, Frostburg used an early 4-0 lead that it never relinquished to earn the final 25-18 win, en route to the team's fourth-straight victory.
Cheatem again posted a match-best 16 kills, with senior Aimee Petrides close behind with 15. Sophomore Megan Wentz added five service aces while Torres tallied 24 assists. Junior Kayla Porter and Torres added nine digs each, while Wentz contributed eight.
FSU returns to the court Sunday, September 20 when it plays host to Marietta at 2:00 pm, followed be a faceoff with Pitt-Greensburg at 4:00 pm. Fans can follow all of the action through live video and live stats at
