FROSTBURG, Md. - The #8/12 Frostburg State baseball team outscored Penn State Harrisburg 24-2 in its Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep, Monday afternoon.
The Bobcats (23-3; 13-2 CAC) opened the doubleheader with 15-0 rout in the opening game. FSU posted two runs in the first before busting out four in the second to take a 6-0 lead. Junior Connor Cooper led off the second with a double to deep center field and sophomore JT Tipton got hit by a pitch to put two runners on with one out. Senior Ricky Castro reached on an infield single to load the bases with two outs. Senior Zach Weiss cleared the bases with one swing of the bat to take a 5-0 lead. Senior Nick Walker drove in the fourth run of the inning with a single through the right side to score Weiss.
Tipton reached on a throwing error in the bottom of the fourth and came around to score on a single from freshman Greg Schneider to give the Bobcats a 7-0 lead.
After a quiet fifth, the Bobcats posted three runs in the sixth before going off for five uneared runs in the seventh to take a 15-0 lead.
Sophomore Jake Stephens came out in relief of senior Bennett Schiltz in the eighth and pitched a scoreless frame before freshman Daniel Richardson pitched a perfect ninth to preserve the shutout.
Schiltz earned his seventh win of the year for FSU after going 7.0 inning and allowing five hits and one walk and striking out five.
Frostburg and Penn State Harrisburg traded a pair of runs in the first inning of the second game before Frostburg broke the tie with three runs in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead.
Walker led off the sixth with a triple to deep center field on the first pitch he saw before senior Ricky Brady sent a 1-0 pitch over the right field fence to give FSU a 4-2 lead. Junior Zach Keeler followed with a single up the middle and senior Lane Farmer singled him over to third to put runners on the corners with one out. Tipton reached on a fielding error by the Lions' shortstop and Keeler was able to come home to give Frostburg a 5-2 lead.
Freshman pitcher Garrett Wiles faced the minimum amount of batters in the sixth and seventh thanks to a doubleplay ball in the seventh before the Bobcats tacked on four insurance runs in the eighth to take a 9-2 lead. Junior Jamaal Windom singled to right to lead off the frame and came around to score on a single from Farmer. After a groundout from Tipton allowed Farmer to advance to third for Schneider. After working a 2-1 count, the freshman lifted the pitch to deep center field and legged out an inside the park home run to give Frostburg an 8-2 lead. Brady drove in the final run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right to score Castro.
Junior Zach Lawhorn came out in relief of Wiles in the ninth and after getting the first batter out the next two on base. Lawhorn got a strikeout and a fly ball to centerfield and end the game for FSU.
Wiles earned his second win of the season as he went 5.1 innings and allowed just two hits and struck out two while keeping the Lions off the scoreboard.
Walker finished the day 6-for-8 with two doubles and a triple and drove in six runs. Schneider went 6-for-10 with a doulbe and a home run, drove in four runs and scored five.
The Bobcats return to action when they host York (Pa.) on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
