JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Trailing 6-0 going into the bottom of the sixth, the sixth-ranked Frostburg State baseball team rallied for 10 runs in the following three innings to defeat Capital Athletic Conference opponent, York (Pa.), Friday night.
Rain in Frostburg forced the home game for the Bobcats to be moved to a neutral field in Johnstown, Pa. The Spartans (11-13, 6-10 CAC) appeared to be more comfortable in the venue as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead behind a home run in the second and a home run and triple in their five-run fourth. Senior Logan Countryman hit YCP's first home run of the day in the second for the Spartans first hit of the game to give them a 1-0 lead. After a scoreless third for both teams, York tacked on five runs in the fourth behind Stephen Miele's two-run home run and Seth Brosius' two-run triple. Sophomore Ryan Callahan got a ground ball to end the inning and limit any more Spartan damage.Â
Callahan got a quiet fifth inning as he set down the Spartans in order and gave the Bobcats (24-3, 14-2 CAC) a chance to strike. WIth two outs and sophomore JT Tipton and freshman Greg Schneider on base, senior Ricky Castro tripled down the right field line to bring home the base runners and cut the Spartan lead to 6-2.
Countryman led off the Spartans' sixth with a double to left before Christian Bilan traded places with him to give YCP a 7-2 lead. After moving to third on a deep fly ball, Bilan scored York's final run of the game as he came home on a wild pitch to give the Spartans an 8-2 lead.
It was then Frostburg's turn to have a big inning. With two outs and their backs seemingly against the wall, the Bobcats plated five runs to cut the Spartan lead to just one, 8-7. Junior Zach Keeler singled through the left side before senior Lane Farmer launched his fourth home run of the season over the 336 mark on the left field fence to pull the Bobcats within four. After back-to-back singles from junior Connor Cooper and Tipton, Schneider hit the Bobcats' second home run of the inning to cut the lead to one.
Junior Zach Lawhorn came out in relief in the seventh for FSU and got Derek Pitzer to go down swinging and strand a runner at first. Frostburg then took its first lead of the game behind three runs on five hits, again all three runs coming with two outs for FSU. Brady kicked off the hit parade with a single through the right side and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Keeler singled through the left side, Farmer followed with a single to left to bring home Brady. Cooper and Tipton once again went back-to-back with a pair of singles, this team each scoring a run to gvie Frostburg a 10-8 lead.
Freshman Tyler Hoffman pitched a perfect eighth inning for FSU and senior Clayton Freimuth pitched a perfect ninth, including two strikeouts, for his second save of the year.
Lawhorn earned the win for Frostburg needing just a third of an inning pitched as he closed out the seventh getting the only batter he faced to strike out. Callahan went 5.0 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and striking out two. Junior Kyle McCormack went 1.2 innings for FSU, allowing two runs on three hits. Lawhorn, Hoffman and Freimuth combined for 2.1 scoreless innings to seal the day for FSU.
Schneider led the Bobcats at the plate with four hits while he and Farmer each drove in three runs.Â
