Frostburg Visits Salisbury For CAC Title

FROSTBURG, Md. – The 19th-ranked Frostburg State University men's lacrosse team will visit eighth-ranked Salisbury University this Saturday with the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament Title on the line.

The Bobcats enter their first CAC Tournament Championship game as the No. 2 seed, while boasting a 16-2 overall record. FSU played to a 7-2 league mark, one of its losses came at home to Salisbury, and earned a first-round bye and a home game against Mary Washington in the semifinals.

Frostburg dispatched the Eagles, 7-6, this past Saturday for a rematch with Salisbury. Junior Tate Rolland scored four goals against UMW and the Bobcats rallied in the fourth quarter for the victory.

The Bobcats don't just play well at home either, as they are undefeated in road games at 8-0 and are outscoring their opponents 126-42.

Salisbury carries a 14-4 overall record into the title contest and earned the tournament's top seed after posting a perfect 8-0 regular-season league mark. In the semifinals, the Sea Gulls defeated York (Pa.), 16-4, and are currently riding an eight-game winning streak.

In the regular-season meeting, the Bobcats and Sea Gulls needed overtime to settle on a winner. The squads battled to a 7-7 tie through four quarters of play and SU escaped Bobcat Stadium with an 8-7 win after Nathan Blondino found the net just 49 seconds into the extra frame.

Salisbury entered the contest ranked 11th in the nation, but the then 17th-ranked Bobcats didn't back down and rallied from an early 3-0 hole for a 6-5 advantage in the third quarter. FSU again led by one, 7-6, midway through the fourth, but Salisbury countered with the game's final two goals. Junior keeper Tom Kraemer made a career-best 16 saves in the loss to stifle the SU attack.

Frostburg and Salisbury have proven to be among some of the top schools in the nation this year. The Bobcats are third among NCAA Division III schools in assists (161), seventh in clearing percentage (0.891), 12th in points per game (22.67) and rank first in fewest turnovers per game (13.39). Defensively, FSU boasts the fourth best scoring defense (5.72).

Meanwhile, Salisbury is fifth in the nation in assists (149), 11th in ground balls (623) and is seventh in scoring offense (14.83).  The Sea Gulls are tied with Frostburg at four nationally in scoring defense (5.72).

Frostburg is led in scoring by senior Devin Colegrove who has 70 points in 18 games and paces the CAC with 41 assists. Colegrove is just one of four Bobcats with 50 or more points as junior Tate Rolland (54 pts.), senior Greg Bourne (51 pts.) and senior Chris Rios (50 pts.) round out the top four scorers. Junior Nick Stailey sits just five points shy of 50 with 45.

Junior Erik Geiser and sophomore Kyle Horak have both handled the faceoff duties this spring and both have won over 60 percent of their attempts. Geiser leads the team after winning 152-of-232 faceoffs (.655), while Horak is 107-of-172 (.622). The duo combined to win 15 or more faceoffs in nine games.

The senior trio of Zach Burkhardt, Andrew Richardson and Paul Newman have been the backbone of a Bobcat defense that limits opponents to under six goals per game. Combined they have scooped up 69 ground balls and caused 29 turnovers this season.

In his first year as a starter, Kraemer has emerged as one of the top keepers in the CAC with the league's second-best save percentage (62.2) and goals against average (5.51). In 18 games, he has 143 saves and has allowed just 87 goals in nearly 950 minutes played.

The winner of the 2015 CAC Championship Game will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament that starts of Wednesday, May 6.
