OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Five home runs in game two helped Frostburg State to a sweep of Stevenson in non-conference softball action, Tuesday.
The Bobcats (20-12) slipped past the Mustangs (13-16) 4-3 in game one following a three-run sixth inning from FSU, while in game two, Frostburg pounded out 15 hits and scored 13 runs behind five homers.
Both starting pitchers Hannah Tavik (sophomore) and Allison Short (freshman) picked up the wins in the circle. Tavik struckout four in the opener and allowed three earned runs on nine hits for her eighth win. Meanwhile, Short posted her 12
th victory with similar numbers, allowing just three earned runs on eight hits while fanning two.
Frostburg rebounded from a 2-0 hole in first contest after Stevenson plated solo runs in both the second and third frames. Freshman Sam Gatton started things off for the Bobcats in the fifth with a double to right center before scoring when the next batter, junior Taylor Blevins, singled through the right side.
Frostburg added three runs in the sixth to capture the lead, 4-2. Junior Lauren Capece reached on a fielding error to start the inning and scored two batters later when sophomore Emily Zengel singled to center. Sophomore Emily Harvey singled up the middle, pushing Zengel to second and both later scored on a single from Gatton and a double from Blevins.
Six different Frostburg players drove in a run in an offensive fueled nightcap, while five Bobcats mashed a home run. Gatton, the game's first batter, set the tone early on with a homer to centerfield, while four batters later, Capece knocked a two-run shot over the left field fence for a 3-1 lead.
In the third, Zengel doubled both home Tavik and Blevins before Harvey hit a home run to center plating Zengel as FSU led 7-1. Tavik smacked a two-run bomb in the fourth followed by a run producing single from Harvey for a 10-1 cushion.
Frostburg's final runs came in the fifth and final frame when sophomore Selina Matulonis smacked a three-run homer to left center.
Gatton finished the afternoon 4-for-8 with two RBI, three runs and a homer, while junior Renay Aubel finished 4-for-7 with two runs. Zengel added three hits, three RBI and two runs.
Frostburg hosts Pitt-Greensburg this Friday at 3:00 pm.
