Softball Plates 19 Runs In Sweep Of Pitt-Greensburg

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State rolled to a pair of five-inning wins in a sweep of Pitt-Greensburg in non-conference softball play, Friday. FSU (22-12) rolled to an 11-1 victory in game one and shut out UPG (14-17) 8-0 in game two.

After a scoreless first inning in the opener, Frostburg exploded for 11 runs on nine hits over the final four innings for the win. Sophomore starter Hannah Tavik fanned a season-high 12 batters and allowed just one earned run for her ninth win. Pitt-Greensburg scored its only run in the first inning, but it was all Frostburg after that.

Junior Renay Aubel reached on a fielding error and later scored on a wild pitch and sophomore Emily Harvey doubled home two as Frostburg led 3-1 after two. Junior Lauren Capece and Tavik scored courtesy of an error on the Pitt-Greensburg outfield in the third for a 5-1 lead.

Tavik doubled home junior Taylor Blevins in the fourth and Aubel hit a towering two-run homerun to left center as Frostburg extended its lead to 8-1. Blevins ended the opener in the fifth with a deep three-run homer to center field for the 11-1 victory.

Frostburg was equally as impressive in game two as freshman starter Allison Short allowed just two hits and struck out four for her fifth shutout win of the season.

After yet another scoreless first inning, Frostburg struck in the second when Aubel hit another homerun to left center and junior Allison Williams singled home Capece for a 2-0 lead.

FSU put the game away with five runs in the third. Tavik doubled home the first run in the third, Williams later doubled home three more, and Harvey smacked a run-scoring single for all five runs of the frame. Frostburg sealed the five-inning win when Short plated Harvey with an RBI groundout in the fifth.

Over the two games, Aubel finished 3-for-6 with three RBI, three runs scored and two homeruns, one in each contest, while Tavik was 3-for-6 with three runs scored, two RBI, and two doubles. In game one, Blevins was 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and a homerun while in the second, Williams finished 2-for-3 with four RBI, one run, and a homerun.

Frostburg closes out its season this Sunday, April 28 with Hood College at 1:00 pm.
