NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – With a pair of losses Friday, the Frostburg State softball team was eliminated from the 2015 CAC Softball Tournament. FSU dropped the first contest of the day to 16
th-ranked Christopher Newport, 5-2, before being eliminated with a 12-3 loss to 7
th-ranked Salisbury.
A day after shutting out the Sea Gulls (26-3) 4-0, the Bobcats (18-10) grabbed a 3-0 lead in their second matchup following two runs in the first and one in the second. Junior Taylor Blevins scored on a wild pitch and junior Lauren Capece singled home sophomore Hannah Tavik for the second run. Sophomore Emily Zengel smacked a solo home run to left field in the third as Frostburg appeared to have control.
Salisbury's first six batters failed to reach base as the Bobcats surged ahead, however, the next three innings would earn the win for the Sea Gulls. Paige Knussman hit a grand slam in the third, while Annah Brittingham hit a three-run bomb in the fourth. SU tacked on two more in the fifth for the win.
Freshman Allison Short allowed six runs, zero earned, in 2.2 innings of work, but unfortunately suffered the loss. Zengel finished the contest 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
In the first game today, Frostburg fell to host and 16
th-ranked Christopher Newport, 5-2. The Captains (26-7) smacked three home runs in the contest and opened up a 5-0 cushion through the first five innings of play.
Scoop Simon started the scoring for CNU as she hit a two-run homer to right field in the third inning for a 2-0 advantage.
Frostburg answered Christopher Newport's 5-0 start with two late runs in the seventh inning to draw within 5-2. Freshman Hannah Stringer reached on a fielder's choice that allowed junior Taylor Blevins to score and sophomore Hanna Tavik walked with the bases loaded allowing sophomore Emily Zengel to cross the plate.
Short endured the loss after allowing just three earned runs in 3.0 innings of work. Tavik posted two hits, with two walks and an RBI.
Frostburg travels to Stevenson on Tuesday for a doubleheader at 3:30 pm.
