#6/8 Bobcats Defeat Lions on Senior Day

FROSTBURG, Md. – The sixth-ranked Frostburg State baseball team used a three-run sixth and eighth inning to propel the Bobcats to an 11-6 win over Penn State Altoona on Senior Day.

The Bobcats (27-3) and Lions (10-17) traded two-run firsts before FSU took its first lead of the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, senior Ricky Castro drew a five-pitch walk to put two runners on. Senior Zach Weiss roped a single through the left side to bring home classmate Nick McElfish. Senior Nick Walker followed with a single of his own to drive in Castro and give FSU a 4-2 lead.

The lead was short lived as the Lions came back with four runs in the top of the fifth to re-take the lead. The Lions took advantage of a Bobcat error on their way to four runs on four hits in the frame. With runners on second and third, freshman Daniel Richardson got Tyler Pastor to ground out back to him to end the inning and the Lions' scoring.

After getting one back in the fifth on a Lion error, the Bobcats took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Zach Keeler drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases with one out for FSU. Senior Lane Farmer extended his hitting streak to six games with a single up the middle to bring around senior Ricky Brady and Weiss. Junior Connor Cooper singled down the left field line to bring home Keeler and push the Bobcat lead to 8-6.
The Lions went down in order in the seventh before stranding a runner in the eighth before the Bobcats added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. After the first two runners reached base, sophomore JT Tipton moved them into scoring position with a perfect sacrifice bunt. Castro doubled down to left field to bring home junior Jeremy Remalia before Weiss grounded out to first to bring home McElfish. Walker drove in the final run of the game with his second RBI-single of the afternoon to cap the Bobcat scoring and give FSU the 11-6 win.

The Lions stranded their final runner at second in the top of the ninth as Richardson got back-to-back strike outs to end the game.

Richardson earned his first win on the mound for FSU after pitching 4.2 scoreless innings and allowing just two hits. The freshman walked two and struck out seven.

McElfish led the Bobcats with three hits while Weiss, Walker and Farmer each drove in a pair of runs.

The Bobcats return to action as they host the sixth-seeded Christopher Newport in the opening round the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
