Brunett Nets Five in Women’s Lax Victory over Allegheny

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Senior Malroy Brunett had five of the Bobcats' 11 goals as the Frostburg State women's lacrosse team downed Allegheny College Saturday night, 11-6.

The Bobcats (2-2) held the advantage in shots (29-14), ground balls (28-13), draws (12-7), and went 13-for-15 on clear attempts. Frostburg was also nearly perfect in free-position shots (4-for-5) and allowed three fewer turnovers than the Gators.

Early goals from Brunett (free-position goal) and senior Jessica Jones (unassisted) put FSU up 2-0 barely six minutes into the game. Allegheny's Shelby Piper got the Gators' on the board two minutes later on a free position shot, but freshman Courtney Ridenour answered back to keep the Bobcats on top, 3-1, with 20:07 left in the first half.

Allegheny (1-1) scored the next three goals and took its only lead of the game, 4-3, with 16:10 to play before halftime. Frostburg kept the game in hand as junior Marissa Howk, sophomore Megan Hart and Brunett each added tallies before halftime to give the Bobcats a two-goal, 6-4 lead heading into the locker room.

In the first ten minutes of the second half, Brunett and Jones both had free-position goals and several minutes later, Brunett added her fourth of the game as she found a pass from Molly Hart to give Frostburg a cushy 9-4 lead.

Goals from Allegheny's Gusty Mead and Kelsey Rodgers kept the Gators' hopes alive and brought the game within three, 9-6, with 8:45 to play. However, Brunett found the back of the net with 5:27 to go and a free position goal from Jones with seven seconds left gave Frostburg its final 11-6 mark.

Along with Brunett's five goals and Jones' three, Ridenour (1 goal, 1 assist), sophomore Megan Hart (1g) and Howk (1g) each added tallies for the Bobcats. Sophomore Molly Hart added an assist and classmates Emani Byrd and Charlotte Hines each scooped up four ground balls. Sophomore goalkeeper Dylan Teitelbaum had six saves for her second win of the season.

Allegheny's Mead and Rodgers both had two goals, while goalkeeper Kaelin Clogan had eight saves in the loss.

The Bobcats travel to Thiel College on Tuesday to face the Tomcats at 7:00 p.m.
