GREENVILLE, Pa. – Senior Malory Brunett powered the Bobcat offense with seven goals to lead the Frostburg State women's lacrosse team over Thiel Tuesday night, 17-9.
Sophomore Megan Hart and senior Jessica Jones added three goals each while sophomore Molly Hart chipped in two. Sophomores Emani Byrd and Charlotte Hines also found the back of the net for Frostburg.
Brunett got Frostburg (3-2) on the board first, scoring a free-position goal just 3:08 into the game. However, Thiel (3-2) had the next three goals from Jennifer Rickens (2:35) and Cassy Mahdi (25:25, 23:06), to jump out to a quick 3-1 lead. Jones and Brunett then answered back with goals just 1:08 apart, both assisted by Hines, to knot the game at three with 20:19 to play in the first half.
The Tomcats' Mahdi took back the lead for the hosts with 16:49 to play, but Frostburg went on a 7-3 run with goals from Brunett (2g), Megan Hart (2g), Molly Hart (2g) and Byrd (1g) to lead 10-7 at the intermission.
In the opening seven minutes of the second half, Thiel's Emily Harrigan and Mahdi sandwiched goals around a tally from Brunett to bring the Tomcats within two, 11-9, but that's as close as they'd get as FSU scored the final six goals to put the game out of reach and pull away to a 17-9 victory. The final 20 minutes saw Bobcat goals from Hines (19:48), Megan Hart (17:28), two from Jones (10:10, 7:21) and two from Brunett (9:17, 5:10).
The Bobcats outshot the Tomcats 37-24, and led in ground balls, 16-9. Both teams had 14 draws each, but FSU allowed seven fewer turnovers.
Frostburg saw assists from Hines (1g, 4a), Molly Hart (2g, 2a), Megan Hart (3g, 2a) and sophomore Taylor Mone (1a). Sophomore Alyssa Barlow paced the Bobcats with four ground balls while goalkeeper Dylan Teitelbaum picked up two ground balls and had nine saves in the win.
Cassy Mahdi led the Tomcats with five goals and Emily Harrigan added three. Amy Boxer and Abby Spriggs split time in the crease and combined for 10 saves in the loss.
The Bobcats open conference play Saturday when they play host to Marymount at 2:00 pm.
