BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Frostburg State wasn't going to be denied its first win Wednesday night, with a hard-fought 12-9 road victory over Bridgewater in non-conference women's lacrosse action.
The Bobcats rallied three separate times over the Eagles (1-2) in order to improve their overall record to 1-2 on the season. Frostburg outshot Bridgewater 29-18 and led 20-14 in ground balls. Frostburg also caused 16 of BC's 26 turnovers and helped keep in-check an attack that entered the game averaging 19 goals per contest.
Sophomore Megan Hart led both teams with four goals, while senior Malory Brunett scored three. As a team, Frostburg posted three 3-0 scoring runs during the contest, but it was the final 3-0 run that proved the difference.
Bridgewater's Paige Hennessy scored back-to-back goals at 14:47 and 12:27 in the second half to knot the contest at 9-9 and temporarily grab the momentum for the hosts.
However, Megan Hart scored on a free position with 10:26 to play to give FSU the lead for good (10-9). Brunett followed it up with a score at 8:13 and Megan Hart sealed the win with 27 seconds left for the 12-9 final.
A pair of three-goal runs in the first half for Frostburg helped the visitors to a 7-6 lead at intermission. Sophomore Charlotte Hines (19:08), senior Jessica Jones (17:01) and senior Ellie Garner (14:54) each scored during the first 3-0 spurt that lifted the Bobcats to a 4-3 lead. Following three-consecutive goals from the host Eagles, Frostburg's second 3-0 scoring outburst from Brunett (5:28), Megan Hart (4:00) and sophomore Molly Hart (00:15) gave the Bobcats a 7-6 lead at the break.
Frostburg's Dylan Teitelbaum made two saves for the victory, while Brunett, Jones and senior Katie Smith led the way with three ground balls apiece. Jones also caused five turnovers.
Meredith Wimbrow scored three goals, while Hennessy and Jenna Devilbiss each finished with two goals and one assist. Eagle keeper Rachel Gruber notched six saves in the loss.
Frostburg State returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Allegheny at 5:00 pm.
