FROSTBURG, Md. – Seniors Devin Colegrove and Chris Rios combined for seven goals and five assists as the Frostburg State men's lacrosse team won its fourth-consecutive home opener by defeating Mount Union, 16-4, Wednesday night at Bobcat Stadium.
Since restarting the program in 2011, the Bobcats have won four of its last five home openers and it is the third-straight year FSU has gone undefeated in the first three games.
Frostburg (3-0) opened up the first quarter with a pair of goals from Rios in the first three minutes. A tally from Colegrove assisted by Keegan Colegrove followed just one minute later, and a mark from senior Greg Bourne put the Bobcats up 4-0. Following a Mount Union penalty, this week's USILA South Offensive Player of the Week Devin Colegrove netted a man-up goal with help from freshman Nick Pontorno.
With 2:35 to play, Chris Daley got the Raiders' on the board, then handed out an assist as Hogan Harris added Mount Union's second goal with just over a minute to play.
Pontorno opened up the second quarter with a man-up goal of his own, followed by another man-up goal from junior Spenser Love with 7:35 to play in the first half.
Solid defense by Mount Union held the Bobcats off until the final minute and a half when Devin Colegrove found Bourne for his second goal of the game. With less than one second remaining, Rios completed his first-half hat trick to give FSU a 9-2 lead at halftime.
Frostburg had four unanswered goals in the third quarter, two from Devin Colegrove and one each from junior Tate Rolland and freshman Ethan Aikin, to send the Bobcats into the final 15 minutes with a 13-2 advantage.
With 12:35 left in the game, Brent Greenberg buried a pass from Josh Stephens to give the Raiders' their third goal of the game, but Frostburg answered back with three goals in five minutes.
Jake Michaud-Dorko gave Mount Union its final mark with 1:02 to play and the Bobcats rolled to a 16-4 victory.
FSU doubled up Mount Union in nearly every category, including shots (49-28), ground balls (41-22), and face-offs won (15-of-23), while turning the ball over just 14 times compared to the Raiders' 23.
