Softball Drops Home DH To Christopher Newport

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State University softball team dropped its home opener to Christopher Newport in CAC action, Sunday. The Bobcats dropped game one, 12-4, and lost game two, 10-1, in five innings.
 
Junior Lauren Capece led the Bobcats (9-6, 0-2 CAC) in game one with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate with three RBI and a run scored. She smacked a three-run homerun to left center in the bottom of the first inning as part of a four-run frame for Frostburg. Prior to Capece's homerun, sophomore Hannah Tavik singled home sophomore Emily Zengel for the game's first run. FSU led 4-0 after one.
 
Sabrina Hill drove in a solo run in the second for the Captains (15-6, 4-0 CAC) and CNU captured the lead for good with an eight-run fifth inning for a 9-4 lead. Brittney Walters and Tori Clarke each drove in a pair of runs to highlight the outburst.
 
The Captains added three more runs in the top of the seventh for the 12-4 final.
 
Junior Renay Aubel finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and walk. Aubel and Capece each led the Bobcats with two hits. Zengel, junior Allison Williams and freshman Hannah Stringer each registered one hit. Tavik endured the loss, despite striking out six batters and allowing just four base runners through the first four innings. She tossed 4.0 innings and allowed seven runs, five earned.
 
In the second contest, Christopher Newport jumped out to a 4-0 cushion following a four-run second inning. Hill hit a two-run homer to left in the second and Hannah Cook hit a grand slam in fifth as CNU surged to a 10-0 lead. In between the four-run second and fifth innings, the Captains added two runs in the fourth.
 
Frostburg plated its only run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore Emily Harvey led off the frame with a single to left field and she scored when freshman Sam Gatton doubled to right field.
 
Gatton led the Bobcats after finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI. Aubel and Harvey posted the other two Frostburg hits. Freshman Allison Short tossed 4.0 innings and allowed six runs, four earned while suffering the loss.
 
Frostburg State hosts Southern Virginia this Wednesday at 3:00 pm.
