FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State posted a pair of shutout wins in a sweep of Southern Virginia in CAC softball action, Wednesday. And the Bobcats did so in impressive fashion.
Frostburg (11-6, 2-2 CAC) finished the afternoon with 41 runs and 38 hits and scored in every inning in which it came to the plate. The Bobcats posted a 16-0 shutout in game one and finished off the sweep with a 25-0 shutout in the second contest.
The sweep marks the first time FSU has shutout its opponent in both games of a doubleheader since Hilbert in 2009. The combined 41 runs are also second in program history in a doubleheader behind Frostburg's sweep of Lake Erie in 2002 in which it totaled 63 runs.
The Bobcats pounded out a combined seven homeruns, a grand slam, five doubles and 36 RBI.
In game one, sophomore Hannah Tavik threw a no-hitter after striking out eight batters in 5.0 innings, while surrendering just two walks. She didn't allow either base runner to reach second.
Freshman Sam Gatton led the way at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort with five RBI, three runs and two homeruns. She smacked a two-run bomb in the second inning and a three-run homer to left center in the fourth.
Tavik finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, two runs and a solo homerun in the second, while junior Renay Aubel was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. She hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, just two batters after Gatton's three-run blast.
Sophomore Emily Zengel was 2-for-3 with three RBI, three runs and a three-run homerun in the second inning.
Frostburg plated four runs in both the first and second innings for an 8-0 lead. FSU tacked on three in the third and five in the fourth.
In the nightcap, freshman Allison Short and Aubel combined for the 5.0 inning shutout. Short tossed the first 3.0 innings and struckout two batters, while Aubel pitched the final 2.0 innings and allowed just one hit with four strikeouts.
Tavik drove in six runs and scored five runs herself thanks to a grand slam in the second inning. She later added a two-run double in the fourth and scored a run in every inning Frostburg came to bat. Meanwhile, Aubel was 2-for-2 with five RBI and two runs scored. She doubled home two runs as part of the 11-run first inning and added a two-run bomb to center in the fourth.
Not to be overshadowed, sophomore Emily Harvey finished 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs scored and three doubles. She doubled home two runs in the first and third innings.
Following an 11–run first inning that saw Frostburg hit through its lineup almost twice, FSU tacked on four runs in the second, six in the third and four more in the fourth.
In total, Gatton finished the afternoon 6-for-9 with five RBI, three runs and two homeruns, while Aubel was 4-for-5 with seven RBI, four runs, a double and a homerun in each contest. Tavik also finished with a homerun in each game, while driving in seven runs and scoring seven herself. Zengel was 4-for-6 with four RBI and six runs scored.
