NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Despite scoring the final three goals of the contest, the Frostburg State women's lacrosse team fell to CAC foe Christopher Newport, 14-8, Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats (7-4, 1-2 CAC) held the advantage in shots (29-23), draw controls (14-10) and was 15-of-17 on clear attempts.
After CNU (5-5, 2-1 CAC) had the opening four goals, senior Jessica Jones finished a pass from sophomore Charlotte Hines to get the Bobcats on the board with 22:35 to play in the first half. Two Captains' goals later, sophomore Molly Hart added her first of the game, but CNU took an 8-2 lead at the half.
Hart and senior Malory Brunett had goals 42 seconds apart to open the second half and cut the deficit in half, 8-4, with just over 25 minutes to play.
Christopher Newport added a goal with 19:20 to go, but after a yellow card sent off a Frostburg player, Hart capped off her hat trick at 17:07 in a man-down situation.
The Captains had the next five goals, with three coming from Erin Callahan, to push their lead to 14-5 with 3:32 remaining.
As time was winding down, however, the Bobcats had three goals in the final three minutes from sophomore Haley Hines (2:55), sophomore Megan Hart (2:20), and Brunett (0:14).
The Bobcats held a 13-10 advantage in shots on goal in the second half and picked up as many ground balls (12-12) as the Captains, but couldn't overcome CNU's second-half 5-goal run.
Frostburg was led by Molly Hart's three goals, five ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Brunett added two goals, three ground balls and won a game-high seven draw controls. Sophomore goalkeeper Dylan Teitelbaum had seven saves in the loss.
Callahan had a game-high four goals and one assist for the Captains, and teammates Lindsay Weaver and Meaghan Galvin added three apiece. Hannah Slough finished with 12 saves in the crease.
The Bobcats return home Wednesday to take on Southern Virginia at 5:00 pm.
