Bobcats Split Road DH At Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. – Frostburg State tied a season-high with 12 runs in game one and finished the afternoon with a split at Shenandoah University, Wednesday.

The Bobcats (9-4) pounded 14 hits and freshman Allison Short picked up her fifth win of the season as FSU defeated the Hornets (5-11), 12-10, in eight innings in game one. Short came on in relief and pitched the final 3.0 innings, while allowing just two runs and scattering four hits.

At the plate, Short and sophomore Hannah Tavik combined to drive in eight runs and eight of the Bobcats' 14 hits. Short finished 4-for-5 with a run scored and five RBI. She produced run-scoring singles in the first, third and eighth innings and she smacked a two-run single in the sixth.

Meanwhile, Tavik was a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs and three RBI. She doubled and scored in the first inning, singled to lead off the third and later scored on Short's RBI single, hit a two-run homer in the fourth frame, walked and scored in the sixth off another Short single and capped game one with a RBI double in the seventh.

As good as the duo of Short and Tavik were, Frostburg needed to rally three times in the opener for the victory. FSU scored five runs over the final three innings to earn the win.

Trailing 8-7 heading into the top of the sixth inning, Tavik walked to start the rally before junior Lauren Capece reached on a fielding error by the SU infield. The next batter, Short, singled to left field that scored both Tavik and Capece for a 9-8 Frostburg lead.

The Bobcats added to their lead in the seventh when Tavik doubled home freshman Hannah Stringer for a 10-8 cushion. The Hornets evened the score in the bottom of the frame and sent the contest into extra innings with back-to-back run-scoring singles.

However, Short drove home junior Renay Aubel for the first Bobcat run in the eighth and sophomore Emily Harvey singled home Short for the second and final run. Short then registered three-straight outs in the bottom of the eighth for the win.

Game two featured less offense than the first and SU escaped with a slim 2-1 victory after doubling home the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

Shenandoah struck first with a run-scoring single in the first inning for an early 1-0 lead. Frostburg answered when Tavik doubled home Stringer for a solo run in the fourth, before Shenandoah earned the win in the seventh.

Tavik was 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Bobcats in the second contest. After picking up the win in the first game, Short endured the loss in the second after tossing 6.1 innings and allowing both runs.

Frostburg State returns to action on Saturday when its hosts Mary Washington at 1:00 pm.
