FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Despite a hat trick from sophomore Molly Hart, the Frostburg State women's lacrosse team fell at Mary Washington, 16-8, to end their six-game winning streak, Saturday afternoon.
Mary Washington, receiving votes in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association's (IWLCA) Week 3 poll, got on the board just six seconds into the game, but Hart and sophomore Megan Hart answered with back-to-back goals 53 seconds apart to give Frostburg an early 2-1 lead.
The Bobcats (6-3, 1-1 CAC) and Eagles (6-2, 2-0 CAC) traded the next two goals, with a second from Megan Hart to keep FSU up a goal, but the CAC foe scored the next four to take a 6-3 advantage with 4:41 to play.
Junior Emily Walker found the back of the net with 3:36 to play to bring the Bobcats back within two heading into halftime.
Mary Washington rallied in the opening ten minutes of the second half with eight-straight goals to put the game out of reach and take a 14-4 lead with 9:50 to play.
Twenty-nine seconds later, Molly Hart added her second goal of the game, but the Eagles' Kara Hogan pushed the home team back to a ten-goal lead.
Molly Hart completed her hat trick with 6:24 to play and senior Jessica Jones chipped in a tally to bring the game to 15-7 with 4:55 before the final horn.
With time expiring, Mary Washington's Kelsey Vincent added the last Eagle tally, but senior Ellie Garner added a goal with 45 seconds to play to round out scoring for the Bobcats.
Despite FSU holding the advantage in draws (14-11) and going a perfect 4-for-4 in free-position shots, the damage was done thanks to Mary Washington's second-half run and the Eagles came away with a 16-8 victory.
The Bobcats were paced by Molly Hart's three goals, five ground balls, two draws and two caused turnovers. Megan Hart added two goals and caused two turnovers while Jones, Garner and Walker all added a goal. Sophomore goaltender Dylan Teitelbaum finished the day with 13 saves in the cage.
Mo Sunderland and Corinne Wiederkehr each had four goals for the Eagles while Taylor Paige, Kelsey Welsh and Rachel Lynch combined for five saves in the crease.
The Bobcats return home Wednesday to take on Saint Vincent at 3:00 pm.
