MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Frostburg State softball team closed out its spring break trip Friday, falling to Rutgers-Camden, 3-0, in the first game and defeating SUNY New Paltz in the second game, 8-3.
Juniors Taylor Blevins and Lauren Capece both went 2-for-3 against Rutgers-Camden while sophomore Hannah Tavik, junior Renay Aubel and junior Allison Williams each had a hit for the Bobcats.
Rutgers-Camden scored two runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth to slip past Frostburg.
Tavik threw her fourth complete game of the season and struck out five in the loss.
After defeating SUNY New Paltz two days earlier, FSU (8-3) racked up five runs in the first inning, two in the second and one in the third to earn its seventh victory in nine games during the marathon spring break trip.
Blevins went 3-for-5 with three doubles while Short and Tavik both finished 3-for-4.
Sophomore Emily Harvey singled to lead off the first inning and Blevins doubled to get runners in scoring position. Tavik then singled to bring Harvey in and give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. Aubel had her first hit of the game to get Blevins across the plate and Capece drew a walk to get on base. After a fielder's choice got Tavik out at third, freshman Rae Harrison drove in Capece then junior Hannah Stringer singled to get Williams home and drive in the fifth and final run of the first inning.
Tavik shot a solo home run in the second innings and Capece and Williams both singled to get on base. Freshman Allison Short drove Capece home and give the Bobcats an early 7-2 lead.
In the following inning, Short picked up another RBI after she batted in Blevins, who reached on a double, to round out scoring for Frostburg.
Short threw a complete-game two-hitter with seven strikeouts to earn her fourth win in the circle for the Bobcats.
Frostburg returns home Monday for a doubleheader against Catholic starting at 3:00 pm.
