MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Frostburg State softball team picked up two more wins Wednesday as it defeated SUNY New Paltz in the first game, 5-1, and Spalding (Ky.) 12-3 in the second game.
Frostburg compiled eight hits and scored two runs in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth to power past New Paltz.
Sophomore Hannah Tavik pitched a complete game five-hitter to pick up her fourth win of the season and finished 2-for-4 at the plate.
Sophomore Emily Harvey singled to lead off the second inning, and was moved around by a sacrifice fly from freshman Sam Gatton. Sophomore Emily Zengel punched a double to score Harvey, then sophomore Hannah Tavik hit a single to drive in Zengel for the Bobcats' two runs in the second.
Junior Lauren Capece hit a single, but was thrown out at second and broke up a double play to allow junior Allison Williams to reach first base. After a single from freshman Allison Short, Gatton hit a single to drive in Williams for the Bobcats' third run.
Tavik reached first on a throwing error in the fourth inning and junior Renay Aubel was walked to get two runners on with no outs. Junior Taylor Blevins reached base, but a fielders' choice got Aubel out at second and moved Tavik to third. With one out, Capece reached on a fielders' choice with Blevins as the victim at second, but the damage was done as Tavik crossed the plate. Williams then singled but advanced to second on the throw and Capece scored for the final Bobcat tally.
In the second game, Frostburg kicked things off in the second inning as Capece and Short both hit singles and Harrison was thrown out at first to move the runners into scoring position. Sophomore Selina Matulonis blasted a three-run homer to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead with one out.
After a Spalding pitching change, Zengel doubled and Tavik drove her in with a single. Aubel singled and moved Tavik to second. With two runners on, Blevins was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Capece reached base on a fielders' choice that allowed Tavik to cross the plate and with the bases loaded again, Short drove in Blevins and Aubel to bring the Bobcats to 7-0 after two innings.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, with Aubel on third and Blevins on second, Capece filled the bases after a Spalding error. Short was hit by a pitch to bring Aubel home and give the Bobcats their eighth run. Blevins was thrown out at home after Harrison hit a single towards third base. Matulonis then hit a single to drive in Capece and junior Ali Jones drove in Short. With bases loaded, sophomore Megan Tracey drove in Harrison and Matulonis to close out scoring for FSU.
The top of the fifth saw three runs for Spalding, but Frostburg's huge second inning was too much to overcome.
Short picked up the win in the circle and allowed just five hits and struck out five. Short finished 2-for-2 with three RBI.
The Bobcats' were paced by Matulonis' 2-for-3 performance in the batter's box and had four RBI. Aubel finished 3-for-4 with a double, while Zengel and Blevins also recorded doubles.
The Bobcats (7-2) will finish up their spring break trip on Friday when they face Rutgers-Camden at 9:30 am and SUNY New Paltz at 1:30 pm.
