MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Frostburg State softball team split Tuesday's games with Guilford and Keystone. The Bobcats fell to Guilford in the first game 6-2, then used a big third inning to take an 8-0 victory over Keystone in the second game.
Guilford (10-5) scored two runs early in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Junior Taylor Blevins tripled in the fourth inning and sophomore Hannah Tavik drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Junior Lauren Capece then hit a double to drive in Blevins and Tavik to knot the game at two.
In the bottom of the fourth, Guilford knocked in four runs to ultimately take a 6-2 lead and held on for the victory.
Blevins, Capece and sophomore Emily Harvey went 1-for-3 and Capece had two RBI. Freshman Allison Short (0-1) gave up seven hits and three walks in 3.2 innings for the loss. Tavik gave up two hits and struck out two in 2.1 innings in the circle.
The Bobcats defeated Keystone in the second game, 8-0, in five innings to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Harvey got things going for FSU in the second inning and singled to get on base. Freshman Rae Harrison then drew a walk and sophomore Megan Tracey moved the runners into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Lead-off hitter Emily Zengel cracked a double to send Harvey and Harrison across the plate for a 2-0 lead.
Frostburg had six runs in the next inning, with Tavik reaching base on a single and junior Taylor Blevins getting walked. Junior Renay Aubel then blasted a double to send Tavik and Blevins home.
After a passed ball, Short reached second and Aubel scored to give the Bobcats a 5-0 lead with one out. Harvey had a single and Short was the victim of a fielders' choice for Frostburg's second out.
With Harvey on second, Harrison walked and after a throwing error by Keystone's catcher, Harvey scored and brought the Bobcats lead to 6-0. Harrison then reached third on the error and Tracey got to second. Zengel loaded the bases after getting walked and a single from Blevins brought both Harrison and Tracey in to round out scoring for the Bobcats.
Harvey and Tavik went 2-for-2 and Blevins finished 2-for-3 in the game. Tavik finished with two doubles, while Zengel and Aubel both had one.
Tavik earned her third win and allowed just one hit in 5.0 innings pitched.
The Bobcats (5-2) will face SUNY New Paltz at 9:30 am tomorrow, followed by Spalding at 11:30 am.
