Bobcats Fall in OT at St. Mary’s

ST MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team dropped a closely-contested game in overtime at St. Mary's (Md.) Saturday afternoon, 70-67.

Senior Ronje James led both teams scoring with 26 points, six rebounds and six steals, while classmate Jasmine Walker added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Bobcats.

Frostburg (2-17, 1-13 CAC) opened the game with a quick 6-0 run with baskets from seniors Shaniqua Hall, James and Walker, but the Seahawks showed early on that they were not going down without a fight.

With 9:33 remaining in the first half, James hit a jump shot to give FSU a 17-14 lead, but Anna McClain brought St. Mary's (6-14, 6-8 CAC) within one after a made layup then both teams went nearly five minutes without scoring a basket.

Freshman Adjowa Pinkrah ended the scoring drought with 4:41 remaining before the intermission, but a Bobcat foul on a made three-pointer by St. Mary's Kerri Kline put the Seahawks up one. With 52 seconds before halftime, sophomore Kache Fields hit two free throws to give the Bobcats a two-point lead, 24-22, at the half.

With the lead changing several times in the opening minutes of the second half, the Seahawks took a 37-31 lead with 13:50 to go. Frostburg then went on a 9-0 run, with James scoring six of those, to take a 40-37 lead.

James followed up with another eight points and Walker added two layups in the next several minutes to put the Bobcats up 56-45 with 5:44 left to play.

Down the stretch, the Seahawks hit 9-of-10 free throws to pull themselves back into the game down just two, 56-54. Nina Haller added two free throws and a jumper for the Seahawks and Matti Vagnoni hit a free throw to put St. Mary's up one, 57-56 with 1:43 remaining. After a jumper and made free throw from James in the final minute to put the Bobcats up two, Kline finished a last-second layup to send the game into overtime tied at 59.

Kline opened the overtime period with a three-pointer to put the Seahawks back on top, but two free throws and a layup by James reversed the lead. A layup by Haller and another free throw by James tied the game for the final time at 64 halfway through overtime.

Despite a layup by Hall and a made free throw from Fields, the Seahawks went 6-for-8 at the line to wind down the remaining 1:44 and secure the win.

Vagnoni finished with 16 points for the Seahawks, while Haller added 14.

The Bobcats visit Mt. Aloysius Monday to take on the Mounties at 6:00 p.m.
