FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State closed within one point early in the second half, but Marymount slowly pulled away for an 85-68 victory in CAC action, Sunday.
The Bobcats needed a win over the Saints (19-6, 13-5) to clinch the sixth and final spot in the CAC Tournament that starts Tuesday. However, Marymount used a quick 8-0 run starting at 16:36 in the second and later outscored the Bobcats 15-4 over a six-minute stretch to lead 69-50 with 6:13 to play.
Marymount also used a balanced scoring attack to outpace Frostburg as six different players scored in double figures, including all five starters. JC Hoellich led the way with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
FSU freshman Tyler Michael finished the contest with a team-high 17 points, including three three-pointers. Senior Jabari Kamau added 15 points, while junior Jerel Carter had 10 points and nine assists. Senior Tyler Campbell grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.
The Bobcats trailed by just four at halftime, 39-35, thanks to an aggressive defense that forced 14 first-half turnovers from Marymount. Frostburg converted those into 14 points that countered MU's rebounding advantage (23-16) and high shooting percentage (55.6%). Junior Breon Powell had five steals in the opening half.
The opening stanza also featured four lead changes and three ties and Frostburg led by as many as eight points, 21-13, when Powell hit a layup with 8:44 showing. Marymount rebounded to lead by three points on several occasions in the closing minutes before a Kamau layup tied the contest for the third time with 2:24 to play. The Saints answered with a layup from Hoellich and two free throws from Danny Ferry for a four-point cushion at intermission.
Marymount continued to shoot the ball well in the second half (53.8%) and made 14-of-20 foul line shots on its way to a 46-33 scoring advantage.
Frostburg caps its season with a 10-15 overall record and a 6-12 mark in the CAC.
